Life insurance for smokers and vapers in Canada
Smoking is the most expensive answer on a life insurance application, and also the only one with a built-in path back to cheaper coverage. Smokers are approved every day at defined rates, and GetInsuredCanada can help you find the insurer that classifies your situation most favourably.
1. What smoker rates actually cost
Expect roughly two to three times the non-smoker premium for the same policy, with the gap widening as you age. As a yardstick from published Canadian rates, a healthy 35-year-old man pays about $30 a month for $500,000 of 20-year term coverage as a non-smoker and about $80 as a smoker; at 55 the same comparison is roughly $210 against $550. Full tables by age are in our guide to what life insurance costs in Canada. Two things follow from those numbers: smoker coverage is still very buyable, and requalifying as a non-smoker is worth real money every year.
2. What counts as a smoker
| Product | Typical classification |
|---|---|
| Cigarettes, roll-your-own, cigarillos | Smoker at every carrier |
| Vaping nicotine | Smoker at most carriers |
| Chewing tobacco, nicotine pouches, gum or patches | Caught by many carriers' nicotine definitions; carrier choice matters |
| Occasional cannabis, not mixed with tobacco | Non-smoker at many carriers, with allowed frequency varying; heavier use priced case by case |
| Cannabis mixed with tobacco | Smoker |
The application question is usually about tobacco and nicotine use within a stated period, most commonly the last 12 months. Because definitions differ at the margins, the borderline cases, an occasional cigar, nicotine gum during a quit attempt, regular cannabis, are exactly where broker placement changes the price.
3. The 12-month rule, and how to requalify
Most Canadian insurers classify you as a non-smoker after 12 consecutive months completely free of tobacco and nicotine, including vaping. Two practical consequences:
- If you already hold a smoker-rated policy, do not cancel it. After 12 clean months, apply to the insurer to have the existing policy reclassified to non-smoker rates. You keep the coverage and the original issue age, and the premium drops. Never cancel coverage before its replacement is in force; the reasons are in why you never cancel the old policy first.
- If you are quitting now and need coverage now, buy at smoker rates today and requalify in a year. Waiting 12 months uninsured to save the difference bets your family's protection on nothing happening in the meantime.
4. What underwriters actually ask
- What you use, how much, and when you last used it, product by product
- How long any quit has lasted. The reclassification clock needs 12 complete months
- Cannabis frequency, and whether it is ever mixed with tobacco
- The rest of the health picture: smoking alongside hypertension, high cholesterol or diabetes is rated as a combination, not as separate items
Honest, complete answers protect your beneficiary. Nicotine is also detectable on the urine test that fully underwritten applications commonly include, so the file corrects itself anyway. In Ontario, sections 183 and 184 of the Insurance Act let an insurer void a contract for material misrepresentation within the first two years, and fraud remains a ground for voiding after that. A policy that will not pay is worse than no policy.
5. How carriers differ
Carriers differ on exactly the cases that matter here: how cannabis frequency maps to rates, whether nicotine replacement therapy during a supervised quit counts against you, and how cigars are treated. The spread between the best and worst classification for the same person can exceed the cost of the coverage itself, which is why we pre-check anonymously with two or three carriers rather than guessing. If your term policy is expiring, note that a conversion keeps the smoking classification recorded at issue: quit since then, and it may be worth re-underwriting instead; still smoking, and conversion preserves your original class with no questions asked.
6. Common questions
Does vaping without nicotine count?
The application asks about nicotine and tobacco products, and testing detects nicotine. Answer the question as asked, precisely. If your vaping is genuinely nicotine free, say so and be prepared for the carrier's definition to decide the class.
Will one cigar at a wedding make me a smoker?
At some carriers any tobacco in 12 months is smoker rates; others make allowances for occasional cigars with a clean nicotine test. This is a placement question, and answering it before applying is exactly what an anonymous pre-check is for.
I quit with a patch. Am I a non-smoker yet?
Not at most carriers, because nicotine replacement is still nicotine. The 12-month clock generally starts when the patches stop. Some carriers are more flexible here, which again is a placement question.
7. What to do next
Start with a quote request, and answer the smoking questions exactly as your situation is today. It takes two minutes, creates no insurance record, and a licensed advisor reviews every file before anything is sent to an insurer.
