How we get paid
Working with us costs you nothing. Here is exactly where our money comes from, and how we keep that from affecting the advice you get.
The short version
When you buy a policy through us, the insurance company pays us a commission. You never pay us a fee - not for quotes, not for advice, not for help with your application or afterwards.
Does buying through a broker cost more?
No. Life insurance premiums in Canada are set by the insurer and filed rates are the same whether you buy directly from the insurance company or through a broker. The commission is part of the insurer's own cost of distribution. It is not added on top of your premium.
The details
- Commissions are a percentage of your first year's premium, and smaller renewal commissions in later years for as long as the policy stays in force. The exact percentage varies by insurer and product type.
- We work with multiple insurers so we can place your application with the company whose underwriting best fits your situation including harder-to-insure customers.
- Because commission rates differ between insurers and products, a conflict of interest is possible in principle. Our controls: we document why we recommended the product we did (suitability rationale) on every file, and before you apply you receive written disclosure listing the insurers we represent and how we are compensated as required by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA).
What we will never do
- Charge you a fee for advice or claims help.
- Promise "guaranteed approval" on anything except guaranteed-issue products, where it is literally true.
- Recommend a product because it pays us more.
- Advise you to leave anything out on an application. Complete, truthful answers are what protect your beneficiary.
- Send your health information to advertising platforms. Ever.
